Give to Gain: Investing in Her Future (International Women’s Day)

I am reflecting this International Women's Day on the importance of empowering girls and women. To me, today is a moment of celebration and a renewed call to action.

The purpose of Tharien’s Art began in 2019 with supporting Hope for Girls and Women Tanzania, and it evolved into supporting the tertiary education of girls. But it is about more than simply funding studies; it is about investing in confidence, independence, leadership, and opportunity. Education opens doors that change not only one life, but generations to come, a lesson my father imparted many times to me and my siblings. I can still hear my father saying  “Never leave a door closed. Explore what is behind it”!

When a young woman gains access to higher education, she gains choices. She gains a voice. She gains the ability to contribute meaningfully to her community and to the world.

Recently, I received a beautiful testimonial from Ciara Hadley, the 2005 recipient of the FAWCO Women in STEM Education Award, which I would like to share:

Thanks to the generosity of Tharien van Eck, I have been able to progress into my second year of my Bachelor’s of Medicine. So far this semester, we have continued to learn about neuroanatomy, hone our clinical skills, and engage with hospital and general practice visits that have been integral to my journey in medicine.

I have just finished my semester exams, rounding off my preclinical learning before I take on the coming placement years. My sincerest gratitude to FAWCO for this award; it has given me the opportunity and the privilege to pursue my vocation as a doctor.

Reading her words reminds me of the young Tharien in 1976, filled with visions and dreams. Our class had about 30 girls. We stood together. We empowered one another. We were empowered and supported by our lecturers and our families.

Once again, I realize: when a girl rises, a family rises. Communities rise. We all rise.

This International Women’s Day, let us give with purpose. Let us support, mentor, encourage, and invest in the next generation of women leaders.

It continues to inspire me to paint another card.

Because when we give, we truly gain.
